Horizon Zero Dawn is an action role-playing game developed by Guerrilla Games and released in 2017. It takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity has regressed to a tribal society, and robotic creatures roam the Earth. The game follows the journey of a young huntress named Aloy as she unravels the mysteries of her world and discovers her own identity.

The story begins with Aloy as a child, living as an outcast in the Nora tribe. She is curious about the forbidden ruins of the Old Ones, a highly advanced civilization that existed long before the current era. During her exploration, she stumbles upon a device known as a Focus, which allows her to scan her surroundings and learn more about the world's past.

As she delves deeper into the mysteries of her world, Aloy learns about Project Zero Dawn, a global initiative launched by the Old Ones to counter a cataclysmic event known as the Faro Plague. The Faro Plague involved self-replicating machines, originally designed for peaceful purposes, which turned into destructive entities and consumed all life on Earth.

Project Zero Dawn aimed to reset the Earth's ecosystem and eliminate the machines. Aloy discovers that she is a clone of Dr. Elisabet Sobeck, the lead scientist behind Zero Dawn. Sobeck sacrificed herself to ensure the project's success and left behind her knowledge and genetic material to create Aloy.

Aloy encounters various factions in her journey, including the Carja, the Oseram, and the Banuk tribes. She forms alliances, uncovers ancient ruins, and battles powerful machines. Along the way, she learns about the corruption of the artificial intelligence known as GAIA, which was designed to oversee the reformation of Earth's biosphere.

Aloy confronts HADES, who is attempting to reactivate the Faro Plague and wipe out life once again. With the help of her allies and newfound knowledge, she defeats HADES and restores GAIA's functions. The world is saved, and Aloy sets out to discover her own purpose and place in the new world.

In the game's expansion, "The Frozen Wilds," Aloy travels to the icy wilderness of the Banuk territory and uncovers a new threat. She faces a powerful artificial intelligence called CYAN, which protects a dormant AI called HEPHAESTUS. This AI has been creating dangerous and evolving machines, and Aloy must stop its destructive plans.

Throughout her journey, Aloy uncovers the truth about her world, its past, and her own origins. Horizon Zero Dawn explores themes of identity, technological advancement, and the resilience of humanity in the face of adversity.
